    Punishment over Mercy:
What makes a nation run more smoothly, a nation that offers mercy or a nation that gives punishment? The problem with the court system today is that when a person commits a crime they are only giving a slap on the hand and sent back out just to do it again. With crime, disasters, and terrorist attacks at its peak, I believe that the United States judicial system should be first in line for drastic reform; we should stop giving so many people second chances and assert more punishment on criminals.
In order to decrease our nation’s crime rate I believe we should monitor offenders, isolate past offenders, and come up with new ways to judge punishment.
The government needs to assert more power over criminals; I believe the first step to achieving that is for the police to constantly monitor offenders. When someone is charged with a minor offence, I believe the job of law enforcement should try and prevent the person from committing the crime again or doing something worse; In order to accomplish this, the officials should constantly keep track of past offences and think ahead as to how a person can build upon it. For example, if a man is charged with assaulting a woman, law enforcers should recognize the next steps such as rape or murder. To further prevent a person from committing a crime again, the officers should set up a monitoring system such as cameras or patrol officers. I believe that with all these things set in place we could decrease crime rates.
What can we do to assert more power over serious offenders? Though I feel it is wrong for anyone who walks away with man slaughter; if it is allowed to happen, they shouldn’t be given the same freedom as a normal person. The question is how do we go through with it? The solution should be simple, in order to prevent a person from committing a serious crime, such a murder, we need to isolate them from the general public. In this kind of banishment, the offender shouldn’t be allowed to leave the premises unless accompanied by an official, and they shouldn’t have anyway to communicate with the outside world. In overall, this would drive someone insane but I believe it is proper punishment.
When it comes to charging a criminal and actually asserting punishment, the judicial system needs improvement. If you put someone through a trial over a serious crime, they will more than likely lie to get out of it all. How can we prevent it? I believe the judicial system should hire specialists who can tell when someone is lying. With specialists like that in court, the judge can better decide on proper punishment; for example if the criminal is asked a serious question and lies, The judge should increase punishment; In other words I believe only people who tell the truth during trial should be given a proper and equal trial.
If we offer criminals fair trials, why can’t we offer the people who have been affected better closure? In conclusion, in order for a nation to run smoothly, the nation and government should assert more punishment. The court systems today seriously lack proper judgment and consequences when it comes to criminal offences; we feel it’s alright to just slap the offenders on the hand and send them back out into the world. I believe in order to decrease crime rates we need to monitor offenders with camera’s and keep track of their offences, isolate major offenders from the public, and hire specialists to improve the judges perspectives when it comes to charging criminals.
